Awkwardly Authentic: Amanda’s Neurodivergent Debut

Dear Reader,

Introductions are in order. I am a 34-year-old therapist whose name is Amanda. I am a first-generation Hispanic born and raised in the southern border town of Mission, Tx. I have several diagnoses that are listed but not limited to ASD Level 1, ADHD (combo), and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The youngest of 4 daughters, one can only imagine the types of stories that would come up about childhood.

Growing up, there were moments that were difficult to understand about myself. It wasn’t until the ripe age of 33 and two years of motherhood under my belt that it came to the realization that I was neurodiverse. Upon seeking formal evaluation, the diagnosis seemed to have popped out as if it was 3D animation, in big bold letters, Autism level 1 and ADHD combined type. As if a light bulb went off, childhood began to make sense. That little girl who struggled to maintain friendships, who spoke too bluntly, always struggled to stay quiet, and delved into her books to the point where she could imagine herself in the worlds that she was reading, had been living her life undiagnosed and full of confusion.

If you are thinking of the idea of possible neurodivergence, I would not hesitate to seek evaluation. If you wish to speak with someone who has gone through a similar journey you may feel free to reach out to me. I would love to work with you. Let’s tackle that together. Looking forward to continuing this journey with you.

Sincerely your awkward therapist,
